Pre & Post-Operative Consultation

The optometrists at the Eye Care Centre have extensive experience in pre and post-operative laser eye surgery care. We provide comprehensive service and have a thorough understanding of how different laser procedures can correct particular vision problems.

Eye Health Exam & Evaluation

Before booking your procedure, you’ll need a thorough eye health exam. Make sure we know you are requesting a laser eye surgery consultation and referral when you book your appointment.

During each consultation, our optometrists evaluate your eye health and the surface of your eye to ensure you are an ideal candidate for corrective surgery. If we determine that you’ll benefit from eye surgery, we’ll move to a discussion on the surgery’s likely outcomes. If you wish to proceed with the procedure, we’ll refer you to a trusted local ophthalmologist.

Postoperative Care & Follow-Up

After surgery, we’ll schedule you for ongoing visits with your optometric team at the Eye Care Centre. These appointments will focus on your healing process and vision. We can also assist with additional postoperative needs, like sunglasses, reading glasses, dry eye treatment, and eye drops.

Current laser eye surgery options are common and generally safe vision-correcting procedures. Your optometrist can help you determine what type of procedure is likely to serve you best.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

LASIK

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) involves cutting a flap in the outer layer of the cornea using a sharp blade or laser, then lifting it out of the way. Your ophthalmologist then reshapes the tissue below using a computer-guided laser set to your precise requirements.

After the procedure is complete, the flap is placed back over the cornea and reattaches in 2 to 3 minutes. Your eyes should be completely healed within the week.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is similar to LASIK, but the outer cornea is removed and disposed of using a brush, blade, laser, or alcohol solution. Using a special computer-guided laser, your ophthalmologist reshapes the exposed corneal tissue to correct your vision.

After the procedure, a special bandage contact lens is placed on your eye to promote healing. The healing process for PRK takes approximately a month.
