Primary Causes of Vision Loss

Patients with diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy, a condition where irregular blood sugar damages the blood vessels that supply the retina. As these blood vessels become compromised, they can leak and harm the retina.

Leaky vessels can also lead to vitreous hemorrhaging, where blood leaks into the vitreous humour and obscures vision. Another possible cause of vision loss is retinal detachment, which occurs when scarring from retinopathy pulls your retina away from the back of your eye.

Retinopathy can be serious, but it is preventable with regular diabetic eye exams and careful management of your disease.

Many eye diseases progress with no symptoms and can cause vision loss before you even know there’s a problem. Annual eye exams can uncover eye diseases early, when it may still be relatively easy to manage them. As such, early diagnosis and treatment are essential for preventing future vision loss.

Many diabetic eye diseases have no early symptoms. However, you should remain aware of common symptoms and reach out to an eye care professional immediately if you experience:

  • Blurred vision
  • Flashes of light
  • Double vision
  • Fluctuating vision
  • Reduced or lost peripheral vision
  • Floaters
  • Distorted vision
