Regular Eye Exams Prolong Your Vision

Regular eye exams can uncover the first signs of eye disease. Many eye diseases can be controlled or slowed if detected early. Our routine eye exams at the Eye Care Centre include testing for common eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Common Eye Diseases

At the back of the eye is the retina, a thin membrane of light-sensitive cells. At the centre of the retina is the macula, which helps control central vision. As an individual ages, the macula naturally deteriorates, resulting in age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in North America in adults over the age of 55. AMD directly impacts your central vision and can cause central vision loss.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that progressively damage the optic nerve. It’s generally associated with elevated internal eye pressure (IOP), but not in every case. Additionally, not all cases of high IOP become glaucoma.

Glaucoma develops slowly and with no early symptoms. It can lead to irreversible vision loss and eventual blindness. Routine eye exams check your eyes for signs of glaucoma, making them a useful tool for preserving your eyesight.

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye’s lens. They usually occur naturally as part of the aging process and are most often found in adults over 60. Despite being one of the most treatable eye conditions, cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in Canada.
