Learning How to Cope With Conjunctivitis

Red Eye: A Broad Spectrum

Red eye is a general condition that encompasses a range of eye issues resulting in increased redness in the eyes. However, the most common cause of red eye is conjunctivitis. In most cases, the disease will heal without medical attention in 3 to 5 days. Though, some conjunctivitis cases can last as long as a week.

Conjunctivitis is fairly common, but should symptoms persist, patients should seek medical attention as soon as possible. It is unlikely, but conjunctivitis can degrade eye health and cause loss of vision if the issue becomes chronic.

The Primary Causes

There are three primary causes of conjunctivitis and treatment for chronic cases will vary depending on the source:

  • Allergies: Irritants like pollen, animal dander and dust can cause conjunctivitis in susceptible individuals.
  • Virus: The source of the issue is a virus and while this is a highly contagious form of red eye, patients will generally have a clean bill of health in a few days without the need for professional treatment.
  • Bacteria: A range of bacteria may be at the root of the problem and in many cases, patients will need medical attention to ensure a complete recovery.
