Are Eye Exams Free for Seniors in Alberta?

As we get older, taking care of our health becomes a greater focus. Your vision is a significant part of that. Many people wonder about the costs associated with regular eye care for seniors, especially when on a fixed income. Understanding how provincial health coverage works can help you prioritize your eye health without financial uncertainty.

For Albertans aged 65 and over, at many clinics, eye exams are not entirely free, but the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) provides partial coverage for one complete eye exam each year. This support helps make routine preventative care more accessible for seniors across the province. You can continue to protect your sight and maintain your quality of life.

Alberta Health Coverage for Senior Eye Exams

For Albertans 65 years of age or older, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan—or AHCIP—covers the majority of the cost for one full eye exam per coverage year (July 1 to June 30). If there are specific diseases or concerns that warrant more frequent testing, patients may be eligible for two examinations per calendar year, however.

AHCIP also provides some coverage for medically necessary eye exams for urgent issues like infections, injuries, sudden vision loss, or other pressing symptoms.

What to Expect for Additional Fees

AHCIP may not fully cover all additional diagnostic procedures or follow-up appointments. Unfortunately when the government eliminated partial examinations and halved the number of images that we can bill per patient in each calendar year, additional fees may be charged when more frequent imaging is required. We are always conscious of trying to minimize any additional fees, and encourage everyone to discuss any potential costs or concerns with your optometrist when your appointment is booked or before your examination begins. Please also remember to bring your Alberta Health Card to your appointment.

The Importance of a Yearly Eye Exam

An annual eye exam does more than check your prescription—it’s a key part of your overall health routine. Regular visits help detect eye conditions early, often before you notice any symptoms.

Detect Eye Conditions Early

Many common eye diseases can develop without early warning signs. A thorough exam can help identify conditions that become more common with age, such as:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy

Connect Eye Health to Overall Health

Your eyes can offer a look into your general wellness. During a comprehensive exam, your eye doctor can spot signs of other health issues, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. This connection makes your annual visit even more valuable for your total health.

Common Vision Changes for Seniors

As you age, you may notice gradual changes in your vision. These shifts are often a normal part of the aging process, but it’s helpful to be aware of them. Regular exams with your eye doctor can help manage these changes effectively.

What You Might Notice

Some common age-related vision changes include:

  • More difficulty seeing clearly at night
  • Trouble judging distances
  • Colours that appear less bright
  • Needing more light to read
  • Dry or irritated eyes

Optical Assistance vs. Exam Coverage

In addition to the eye exam coverage discussed above, Alberta also offers an Optical Assistance for Seniors program. For those who qualify, the program provides up to $230 every three years to help pay for prescription eyeglasses. This program does not cover the cost of eye exams—it is specifically for corrective eyewear.
